That is indeed what fundamentalism is.
But not all religion is fundamentalist.
Put simply, a fundamentalist read the text literally.
So for example, a fundamentalist would believe God created the world in 6 days.
But there are plenty of theologians who believe the text to reveal the essence, not the word for word truth. So they may well believe the Big Bang Theory and state that God was who put the singularity there in the first place.
