Thoughts on tonight... (warning long post)
Had we not conceded at the death (which could easily have been avoided as it happened just after Earnshaw was stopped scoring with a great last second challenge which should have resulted in a corner, not the given goal kick) then people would have been rightly praising the team for a good win after Saturday and considering we were 1 down tonight. I was actually there tonight (unlike alot of people who have posted on this board tonight) and I having paid my money and given up my day, I go through the same feelings as everyone else. It is ever so easy to blame Worthy for not winning and you can harp on all you like about having 2 people up front or whatever but it simply isn't all his fault, the players have to take some of the blame. Drury should have used his experience and not dived in to give the free kick away for their second because we looked so comfortable before that went in. Yes it is disappointing and we cannot continue to give points like these away but it gives me hope for the remainder of the season that if we can keep going for the 90 minutes and learn to keep the lead, we will do alright cos we are guna win most of our games at home.
A few points from the match:
- Andy Hughes was 1 of our better players tonight. Fair play to him, it was his first game of the season so it couldnt have been easy to get upto match speed quickly but he was neat and tidy and had a hand in 2 of the goals.
- The defence looked shaky but once again I thought Colin looked a very good player. That guy runs a hell of a distence throughout the game, gets up the pitch very well to support Croft and gets some excellent tackles in. The Doc also made some quality blocks to preserve the lead.
-Crofty is a legend. As already mentioned, may be in trouble for inciting the Southend fans but only give out as good as he got. Quality signing by Worthington.
-Superb away support tonight, kept singing and made a really good atomosphere which should have been rewarded with the 3 points.
Overall, I am disappointed that we didn't get the win tonight but think there are some positives to come out of the game. Hopefully we will beat Palace on Saturday and things will be looking pretty good.
O and we also have the top scorer in the league in little Earnie. He misses a fair few chances but still comes up with the goods. Love the man, lets hope he stays fit cos who have we got if not!
Keep the faith,
OTBC
