If you want decent playback
but also don't want to record only one item per disk, make sure any machine you're thinking of buying has a 3hr record option.
I started off with a Philips machine which would record 1,2,2.5,3,4 and/or 6 hours on a standard dvd. I used the 3hr option most, as you can often get 2 films on a disk with (ummm) acceptable quality. I say Ummm because picture quality has never been that big an issue for me in 90% of cases - and where it was, I'd then use the higher-grade options.
But that machine broke, and I bought a Sony machine which can record DVD-R *and* DVD+R as well, so it ought to be reasonably future-proof. Thing is it can only record 1,2,4 or 6 hrs per disk: and the 4hr option doesn't cut it for even my low standards.
That's the extent of my experience, so I can't name a good or bad make, sorry: but the get-what-you-pay-for thing must apply, I'd hope. I'd guess that any of the known brands will do the sort of job you'd expect - so it'd be worth asking your friendly salesperson about the recording options. i bet they won't know.
