Some people are acting like we're bottom of the league and playing total s**te
After one bad performance. So far, I'd say this is the first game this season you could say there weren't really any positives for us. Yes, everyone knows we have a thin squad - you'd rather we padded it out with any old s**te? So far, the likes of Croft, Camp, and the Welsh lad that fell through at the last minute (Cotterill?) are precisely the ones we should be targetting - young, talented, ambitious, and with plenty to prove.
So far this season we've played the way the signings dictate. One of my gripes about the signing of Earnshaw is that when you spend ?3.5m on a player, you can't really leave him out. Huckerby has to fit in on the left, Croft we have been dying for on the right for years. Our Desmond has been playing well and worth his place, Saffers picks himself, and Robinson has been doing what he's good at - popping up all over the place and keeping us going. Maybe, MAYBE we could go 3 at the back, but Doherty is as slow as a wet week and clumsy to boot, Flem reads the game well but isn't hte quickest either, Spillane is a bit green, and it would probably mean dropping Drury, and we would be skinny down the flanks at the back, particularly as Huckerby and Croft aren't noted defenders.
Has anyone given Coventry any credit here? They are a decent team, and Mickey Adams is no mug - he will have watched the tapes and picked out the obvious way to play. Get a big lump to push Shackell around, sit on Safri and Etuhu hard, and man-mark Hucks with someone with a bit of pace. If they'd had someone like Leon to run at Doherty, we'd have been in real trouble. I agree that Spillane and Ryan J ought to be on the bench, but overall it's not the end of the universe like some are making out.
Why do people get so excited over the post-match interviews anyway? When was the last time a manager, with the possible exception of Wee Gordie, said anything original at a press conference - Kevin "I'm not good enough" Keegan?. I'm sure anyone here could write Worthy's after-match comments based on the result every week and not be wrong, but do you honestly believe that's what he thinks or says when the dressing room door closes?
Would you rather be where we are this season in terms of performances and points, or this time last season, with the wet dream team of Hooves and Jarrett in the middle? That is the difference - we are playing proper football the Norwich way and look like getting results. That's a decent start for me. Bad days will happen and the test is to make sure they don't carry over into the next game.
