Well, in purely footballing terms ...

... I've always understood it to be a player who is loved by his club's fans out of proportion to his ability, usually for some reason other than their football skills. (Although it helps if the player isn't completely rubbish).

David Nielsen is a good example - popular more because of his ability to fire up the crowd, and fist a lot, and generally act like a loose canon, not because he was particularly good at football.

I liked your example, though.
