I guess it depends which columns you're reading in which papers
Some journalists aren't naturally great writers but are good at finding stories and interviewing.
Others could be Booker Prize winners but utterly crap at getting people to open up to them.
Personally I think some of the over-educated toffs who wouldn't say boo to a goose getting jobs at Archant these days aren't a patch on many of the old-school reporters who joined as a vocation as opposed to something they thought was glamorous and exciting (which 99.9% of it isn't).
