how many players have we taken on trial and then signed?

I can only think of Libbra.
Under Rioch & Hamilton we were permanently trialling people and never signed any of them. The very fact that a player would agree to a trial rather than actually signing suggests he's probably desperate and not in demand. That's almost always for a reason!
