Just back from the game (long post)
Here's my thoughts. Btw, for those who don't know, Newcastle won 2-1, McVeigh scoring our goal.
Firstly; what a storm! In the 89th minute, the heavens opened, and I cannot honestly think of another time where it rained so much. I had a 5 minute walk to my car, and was soaked.
Secondly, to the football, and we can kiss goodbye to any hope of getting in the top two; just not good enough.
Hughes was totally crap in the right wing position. Every time he got the ball it was passed backwards, and we benefitted immediatly when he went off. He didn't get forward with any effect, and allowed N'Zogbia too much room.
While we're on the subject of the right, Fleming as a result of Hughes had to do twice the work, and simply couldn't cope. N'Zogbia was too quick for him. We either need to get a quicker right back, or someone willing to help Fleming out.
The long ball still prevails. Too many times did I see Gallacher wave away Doherty only to punt it upfield to Titus Bramble. When we got it on the floor we actually did quite well with it.
Huckerby needs to practice his final balls in. He creates the opportunities, but too often his passes and crosses let him down.
McKenzie doesn't work alongside Earnshaw. I don't know why not, but it seems to be as if we need someone a bit more creative and with the ability to thread passes together. To that end, my partner for Earnie would be McVeigh. When he came on, he did well, worked his socks off, and got himself into a great position to score the goal.
Ok, that's the whinges, now to the good points.
Jurgen Colin is now Drury's deputy. He took the left back position for this game, and while he didn't do bad, I'd like to see him given a shot as right back, with Drury as left back. I have a feeling he could do well for us.
Etuhu looks better with every game I see him. He hustled well, made more passes than he scuffed up, and got some good tackles in. He doesn't get forward or backwards enough still, though.
Doherty. What would we do without him? I don't know where the "old" Doc has gone, but this Doc is the first name on my team sheet; solid, dependable, and saved us countless times.
Gallacher made some great saves, and continued to look good. Shackell had some good moments, and seems to have lost his "hug" which gave away too many free kicks. Newcastle fans were great, made alot of noise and all gave Fleming a standing ovation, which is more than I can say for 50% of us.
So yeah. I think we need a right winger and a right back and to give McVeigh a go with Earnshaw, and learn to ditch the long ball totally.
