And no, it isn't normal. If it's getting hot it's because energy from the electricity is being disspiated in the dimmer unit. This is likely to be the potentiometer (i.e. variable resistor) getting hot. Shouldn't really happen in a domestic unit (you can buy decent ones from B&Q).
