Partridge hunt gets under way
CHRIS WISE
Norwich City are involved in a three-way chase for the services of former Liverpool winger Richie Partridge, the player himself revealed yesterday.
The man who once scored a spectacular goal against the Canaries whilst on loan at Coventry, was released by the European champions at the end of last season and is currently looking for a new club.
The Sky Blues are now keen to clinch his services on a permanent basis but Partridge told Liverpool's official website that they faced competition from both Norwich and Leeds, who are also looking to add a wide player to the mix ahead of the new Championship season.
Partridge picked out Coventry as his preferred option but nothing has been settled yet and the Canaries' superior spending power could yet prove to be decisive as the battle for the player's signature starts to hot up.
"Coventry, Norwich and Leeds are interested in me and if I had the choice, it would be Coventry,? said the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.
"I really enjoyed it there when I had a season-long loan."
Partridge scored four goals in 31 appearances for the Sky Blues between September 2002 and April 2003. But following his return to Anfield, the 24-year-old fell out of favour and after just two substitute appearances in Carling Cup encounters during 2004-05, he was shown the door by manager Rafael Benitez.
Norwich fans will remember the player for his brilliant opener in the 1-1 draw at Highfield Road, just after he had completed his loan switch from Liverpool. The flying winger really did show what he could do that night as he ran half the length of the pitch before unleashing a superb 30-yard drive that flew past Robert Green to give the hosts a lead which was later cancelled out by Paul McVeigh.
It's a fair bet that Worthington still remembers the contribution Partidge made that night - and it comes as no surprise to learn that he remains an admirer of a man who clearly has plenty of ability and is now available on a Bosman-style free transfer.
