Spot On Iwan!

He's a class player-you don't mug your way around his international record (and whatever else we can say about Denmark, they've won the Euro Cahmpionships, England haven't even got to a final!) and play for the clubs he's played for by not being more than decent at the game.

He does and has tried to do it the Italian way-he stops, puts his foot on the ball, looks up, and looks for the pass-in Italy, thats how the game is played, teams stand off, let the others come at them, wait for the mistake-in England, he doesn't even get the time to stop before someone clatters him, let alone look up. Watch an Italian Serie A game, its all slow and considered build up, a million miles away from the game here, no wonder he struggled-theres an argument that class players should be able to adapt whatever the circumstances, but you look at aome of the great tennis players-Sampras, unbeatabhle at Wimbledon, but could he do it on clay...? Golf-great players in the US, can't play on a links-the list goes on and on.

I'd love for Thomas to stay & play as right back next season, and be captain, I really would, I love it when we have a player of his repute and experience at the club. But I think of the European players we've had before who have struggled, the Muzinic's, the Mortensens, the Fugelstadts, is he going to be one of them, or is he going to be a Steeno (much missed, IMHO) or a Matty S?

I think the answer is in Thomas's head, if he wants to, he'll adapt and thrive. But does he have the same kind of motivation as a 19, 20 year old at the start of his career? And he certainly doesn't need his international manager saying the things he does. Time will tell-but Worthy's comments, following the reported West Ham interest says something and thats that he is pencilled in as right back at the start of the season.
