Norwich City: Head of scouting Gabor Ruhr on Colney set up
Norwich City's recently-appointed head of scouting, Gabor Ruhr, believes the Canaries are well-placed to take advantage of the data revolution sweeping elite football.
The 37-year-old arrived in the summer from Germany with a background in performance analysis, scouting and leadership at clubs like Eintracht Frankfurt, Hertha Berlin and 1. FC Köln.
City have made no secret of their drive to be at the forefront of a data-led approach that has helped establish clubs like Brighton and Brentford in the Premier League.
From Mark Attanasio and Norfolk Holdings, through sporting director Ben Knapper and his team, Norwich now have a growing number of scientists using in-house data points to help inform decision-making right across the football department at the Championship outfit.
Ruhr's expertise was a key factor in his hire, with Lee Dunn stepping up to become Knapper's assistant, and the German's first impressions of the set-up are favourable.
"We have the ideal conditions and opportunities here to be innovative and creative," he said. "Norwich is exceptionally well-positioned in all areas, yet it still retains this family atmosphere.
"Our aim is to achieve our sporting goals while simultaneously developing players and giving exciting talents a chance to break into top-level football.
"I find it incredibly exciting and challenging at the same time to fill the gaps created by transfers. "England is a bit further ahead than Germany in this respect.
"English clubs have large financial resources, so can invest more money in innovation and technology. The openness to the use of data and the willingness to innovate also differ.
"Algorithms and performance indicators can now precisely determine a player's passing accuracy under pressure, their sprint frequency, or their space-deploying ability."
Andre Brooks was the headline summer signing from Ruhr's first window operating as part of Knapper's staff.
City also brought in young Brazilian defender, Bruno Alves, and made a late move for Fenerbahce winger Anthony Musaba on loan, after Ali Ahmed suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in the final pre-season friendly.
For Ruhr, the art of scouting remains a mix between data and the eye test.
"One doesn’t work without the other," he said, in a wide-ranging interview with football database site Transfermarkt. "We’ve developed our own data tool that performs a pre-filtering. Based on this, we conduct a detailed video analysis of the player.
"We try to give the data context and add additional information. Data is a tool for us, but it should never be the sole basis for evaluation.
"Of course, it’s also possible that a player catches our eye during live or video scouting, and we then use the data platform to verify our impressions or compare players.
"After that, we scout the soft factors on-site at the stadium. We look at how the player reacts under pressure, how he behaves when given instructions by the coach, and what his body language is like after conceding a goal.
"Through so-called limb tracking, information like body language will also become more measurable in the future.
"But for me, the key element in the end is the conversation with the player. Much more important than the purely sporting impression is the personal component, the fit of his character within the team structure and the club environment."
