Norwich City: Attanasio's Milwaukee Brewers ready for Padres...
(pinkun today)
Norwich City’s majority shareholder Mark Attanasio has mapped out his route to turning the Milwaukee Brewers into World Series contenders.
The Brewers host the Padres in game one of the divisional series in the early hours of Sunday (UK time), after finishing the regular season with the most wins in (MLB) major league baseball.
Attanasio and his family have transformed Milwaukee into serial post-season contenders during two decades of ownership.
That formula is now striving to cross over into English football to bring longer term success to the Canaries, with Attanasio and Norfolk Holdings effectively taking control of the Championship club in March 2025.
“We have consistently won with lesser payrolls. It is a disciplined system consistently applied over many years. We haven’t wavered. We can talk about stars but we have a roster of 50 players and we expect a lot out of all of them,” said Attanasio, speaking on Milwaukee radio station WTMJ’s morning show.
“Pat Murphy (manager) has been the manager for three years but actually with us for 10. Same with Matt Arnold (general manager). Our reliance on our people and the consistency of how they built their staffs and the work ethic they bring makes a difference.
“We expect to compete every year, whatever the payroll. (Milwaukee have been independently ranked as the 19th biggest payroll out of the 30 MLB teams) Whether that is the amount of payroll, what prospects we are willing to trade, and at what time, or the resources we put into player development, which are significant.
"We want to be responsible year in, year out to be able to compete. If you go all in you can lose a lot of money, and that tends to set you back, and we always want to step forward.
“The Brewers fan base I want to congratulate because we have the number one market share of all local broadcasts in major league baseball. This season 2.8m fans, just under, came to the ball park. That puts us 10th in the MLB in attendance in what is considered the smallest market by demographic.
"Great television ratings, great sponsors, another record in retail sales, our fans allow us to do what we do here in terms of when you look at the payroll. We are still spending more than 11 other teams, in the smallest market, and that is thanks to the support of the community.
“This year seems different than pretty much all of them. It is hard to put your figure on why. We never won more than five games in a row, which is apparently the first time that has happened for a team who won more than 100 games in a season.
"We have been really consistent all year. This team has really performed and it has enormous depth, and they expect to be here. When we win the celebrations are not quite as crazy as maybe before.”
