Any superhero experts around?

You know when Superman flies through the air with his arms stretched out in front of him sometimes his fingers are straight out and other times he makes a clenched fist.

Is the fist like a "low gear?" Aerodynamically speaking, I would imagine he can fly faster with his palms flat.
