Someone won the TdF on a bike with no gears at all
But it was back in 1936 (and every year before that).
Actually that's not strictly true, in that the 1936 bike did have two gears. But you had to take the back wheel off and flip it over to change from one to the other, so it wasn't very user-friendly.
