I mean lets be clear
If there was money in it for them, restricting access according to age would be a problem that big tech would solve, and solve very well, in about a day. My phone already scans my face 20 times a day.....dont try to tell me that it isnt possible to found an access policy based around this. They can ship targeted adverts at all of us second by second according to the vast body of data they hold on each of us, but apparently they are powerless to stop kids watching tiktok 10 hours a day? Okay.
The truth is that tech companies have done NOTHING about restricting children's access, as that has been the most profitable strategy. And every shred of their energy has gone into making their platforms as utterly addictive as possible, as this is a necessary condition to survive in these winner takes all tech markets. If they hadnt, they would be some tiny tech firm we would never have heard of, and some other bunch of voracious c**ts would be pumping addictive s**t into your kids heads every day instead.
All the big tech firms absolutely know the effect it has, as they have all the data, and they use this daily to fine tune what they're doing to ensure its addictiveness. Company reps sent out to bat in the media may claim that they dont know and its all difficult and very nuances, but a key part of their job will be to have taken a conscious decision to never look, so they can claim they dont know.
They all basically figured out some time ago that this strategy leads to so much money they can just pay any fines/law suits that arise, and probably influence elections enough to ensure a steady flow of big tech supporting MPs/senators/presidents. This IS the business model.
This is just the modern equivalent of factories pumping horrible s**t into rivers, so that all the fish die and people downstream have deformed babies from drinking/washing in it. Yes, we want the benefit of all the cheap goods made in the factory, but no, you can't continue to pump s**te into the river. We dont say "ah well, we just need to educate the public". You regulate to stop the "bads". (At least that is the principle...albeit there is sadly still quite a lot of s**te in the rivers.)
All that is remarkable is that its taken this long to actually do something.
