You take power further away from the populous

It describes the gap that occurs when democratic institutions or decision-making processes are removed from the people they govern - either geographically, administratively, or procedurally - making it harder for citizens to hold power accountable.

I am quite a big fan of the Swiss model. Main governance, Cantons, but referenda for many issue, with the ability of the populous to force a referendum given enough backing.
