Kenny McLean looks ahead to Norwich City's busy summer.....
(pinkun)
Kenny McLean believes Norwich City already have the ingredients for a promotion challenge and is relishing the prospect of what Philippe Clement can add to the mix this summer.
There was a sense after the Canaries' final home game of the season, that saw their thin play-off prospects fade away, that disappointment at the final whistle was quickly surpassed by excitement about what could be to come at Carrow Road.
Few know better than City's captain the minerals required to win promotion from the Championship, given McLean was a key part of the squads that stormed the title in both 2018/19 and 2020/21, and with Clement's side already showing signs of progress, the Scot believes the foundations are firmly in place for another tilt at the top flight.
"It's hard to gauge how close we are and to look back on what has been in some promotion seasons that we've had. I like to look forward and see what's ahead of us. There are exciting times ahead of us; that's the main thing.
"I think there's a lot of good in the building, not knowing the manager or club's plans, I don't know what the summer will look like, but what's in place now is good," City's captain said.
"We have some young hungry players who want that success, it's been at this club, that's why they came here, and we'll do everything we can to get better and improve for next year because it's going to be harder again.
"I don't want to speak too highly of the manager but I think everybody knows what he's done at this football club and it'll be a good summer and we'll come back stronger. There's an expectation at this football club now, a demand from the fans on us as players, and that's exactly what I want."
City's end-of-season story also featured the departure of long-serving head of medical services Chris Burton after nine years, alongside five first-team players who will leave when their contracts expire this summer.
"Burts is one of my closest mates at the football club, and he's done so much for me personally. I've mentioned it before, the 300-odd appearances, I would have come short of that if it had not been for Burts," McLean said.
"I appreciate that, and then obviously the lads that are leaving, they've given everything. The fans appreciate that when they've worn their shirt, they've done it with pride, and they should be proud of what they've done. They'll go on to new things, and we wish them well."
