I don't think it was a deliberate attempt to injure

it was more a frustrated/petulant kick of the foot, a bit like the way you instinctively swat at a fly that buzzes near your head.

But it was still dangerous and in the modern game you can't do it without expecting it to result in a sending off (you'd deffo have wanted one if it had been the other way around)
