But that’s what, in some ways, gives it the interest.

With VAR, I think for me the main issue is around offside. As it’s an I/O situation, argument *should* be irrelevant. However, you come to the point where technology can’t measure it, through image quality, frame rates, or timings, or whatever, and that’s when the debate starts. Personally, I’d like to go to a system where the linesman is the judge, the VAR is called in to arbitrate only and there is an “umpire’s call” margin of error. That would stop the line judge handing all the decisions over to VAR and not flagging, play continuing and then being called back.

I’d also like a Hawkeye system to call all ball out of play situations. Set pieces are so important now, a wrongly called corner (or one not given) could have a huge impact on the game. Or balls being out of play in a situation leading to a goal, and so on.

Combined with an independent timekeeper, you could actually have referees and their assistants dealing with things like fouls, particularly at corners, time wasting and actual rule infringement, like they’re supposed to.
