Depends how he wiped it (the data, not that)....

Unless he zeroed his storage, which takes an incredible amount of time, then it is still recoverable.

But what they may find, if no incriminating documents themselves on the media, could be logins / passwords (stored in a password manager) for online accounts where some of it does still exist. He may have had unknown online user accounts that may come to light. If no password exists then given what they've arrested him for they could legally require him to give access. There will also be logs that can be interesting.

They'd also be on the lookout for things (especially online accounts) that he may simply have forgotten about and not removed or emptied in time.
