Maybe it was just a bad trip

Maybe he'd actually gone into his friendly local, and just hallucinated that it was the Queen's Head and that everyone was staring at him. Maybe the staff in his local were too nice to tell him that he'd walked in with his underpants on his head and started screaming that everyone was trying to kill him.
