Russell Martin and Gary O'Neil are among the coaches interesting Norwich City as they begin their search for a new head coach.
The Canaries have kickstarted their hunt for Liam Manning's successor after his dismissal was confirmed following Saturday's defeat to Leicester at Carrow Road. Sky Sports are reporting that former City captain Martin and midfield team mate O'Neil are among those set to be sounded out.
Martin, a City legend and former captain, was recently sacked by Rangers after joining in the summer following a stint at Southampton that included promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
It's understood he was interested in a conversation with the Canaries in the summer, before the club opted to move in a different direction at that stage.
O'Neil is understood to have admirers inside Carrow Road and was shortlisted for the post in the summer ahead of Manning's appointment. He turned down the chance to return to Wolves and reports close to Southampton and Middlesbrough suggest he isn't in the running for those jobs.
The 42-year-old previously enjoyed a spell at Bournemouth before being replaced by Andoni Iraola. He then went onto keep Wolves in the Premier League before being sacked in December 2024 following a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich.
The report adds that City 'are keen to gauge their interest in the job' ahead of their shortlisting process with a view to making an appointment prior to their Championship return away at Birmingham following the November international break.
Under-fire sporting director Knapper has been tasked with leading the search for Manning's successor, but it's understood that majority shareholder Mark Attanasio will be more hands-on in this pursuit.
The Canaries are believed to be identifying head coaches with the capability of galvanising, not just the team who sit 23rd in the Championship, but the club as a whole. They will also need to align with their long-term strategy, with City not looking for a fire-fighting candidate.
Both Martin and O'Neil have experience of playing for the club, with both involved in their play-off success under Alex Neil back in 2015. Meanwhile, the Scottish Sun are reporting that ex-City captain Mark Fotheringham could emerge as a potential option.
