A few thoughts:

I think that he doesn't want to rush to a kneejerk reaction but will now have a much better feel for the fan feeling than the view that was being filtered by Zoe and Ben

I think his main reference point / contact seems to be Birmingham who got Rooney in mid-season and then plumetted out of the division. I.e. expensive managerial change doesn't always give you better results.

They also then managed to bounce back first time so he may be more relaxed about this than he lets on.
