It is hugely unlikely they will have to pay off the whole of the contracts.
I believe that normally they continue to be paid as though they are employed by the club until such time they find alternative employment. There may be some kind of lump sum payment in addition but the total paid is not likely to be the full 4 years. Ultimately it comes down to the specific terms of the contract but I believe this is commonly how it goes
