"Norwich City expect star striker Josh Sargent to stay at Carrow Road at least until January.

The Canaries are set to sell key man Marcelino Nunez to Ipswich Town in a £10million deal, with Silkeborg's Pelle Mattsson replacing him as he arrives for £3million.

But sporting director Ben Knapper plans to end his frontline business after that midfield shuffle, with further departures and signings highly unlikely aside from fringe players who are free to find new clubs.

City's asking price for Sargent has continued to rise as Monday's transfer deadline closes in, with the diminishing likelihood of an effective replacement impacting the willingness to sell they displayed early in the summer.

The American has scored four goals in his first four appearances this season, underlining his importance to a side in poor form after rapid-fire home defeats to Middlesbrough and Southampton.

Sargent had been keen on a move but declined to act up in search of one, taking the captain's armband while Kenny McLean was absent with an ankle injury. He was rested for the Saints' Carabao Cup victory at Carrow Road but received confirmation of his return to the US national team squad on the same day.

Norwich could still sanction departures for the likes of Shane Duffy and Anis Ben Slimane, who have been told they have no significant part to play under head coach Liam Manning this term. Both are still training with Manning's first team and Slimane made a brief Cameo against Southampton, but their club are open to offers."
