Neil Young

Incredible set last night.

One of my first pinpoint memories of music, not just hearing it, but feeling it, was sitting on the floor after school, before my first ever Norwich match, listening to my Dad’s Neil Young records. It was September 1994, away at Portman Road. We lived in Suffolk but I was die hard Norwich and so were my mates at primary school. Strange thing was, this was my first Norwich game and we had to sit with the bloody Ipswich fans!

But I didn’t care. I was buzzing. Shakey in my ears. I already knew at that age, listening to Neil’s 90s grunge phase would get me fired up and excited, deliberately replaying Rocking in a Free World so it rang in my ears all night. We beat the scum, I think 2-1.

I grew up in a Neil Young and Springsteen house.Following that night my dad and I must’ve done hundreds of trips up and down the A140 with Neil or Bruce on the car stereo. Some wins. Plenty of losses in those days.

We saw Neil and Bruce together in Hyde Park around 2009. Paul McCartney made a cameo. It was one hell of a memory.

Last night, watching Neil up there at 79, weathered and still full of soul, I couldn’t help but think of my dad and those early Norwich games. He’s moving slower now. Bit greyer. Rarely goes to matches with me, though I’m on the road with my nephew, trying to give him a musical education.

Long may they both run.
