Have England ever produced a really world class ball playing CM?

I can think of some brilliant box to box, all action and goal scoring type midfielders (Gerrard, Lampard), even some brilliant DCMs (Scholes) in relatively recent times. But have we ever had a really classy CM? Someone like Modric that can get on the ball and dictate a game.
