I'm betting Germany are seeded in such a way that if they top their group they can't meet Brazil until the final (assuming Brazil top theirs).
That means if Germany come 2nd in the group we're better off doing likewise because the:

1) we play Ecuador rather than Germany in the last 16: AND
2) we can't meet Brazil until the Final

Best of both worlds.
