… I am very much of the opinion that standards of refereeing this season, in many of the games I’ve seen, on TV and in the flesh, Norwich games and others, have been lower than in previous years. I don’t know if that’s actually the case, or whether rules of the game and other developments (rolling coverage and relentless microanalysis probably major factors) have either made refs’ jobs harder or more opaque to the spectator. My gut feeling, though, is that they’re not as effective as in the past. Another gut feeling, with no evidence to back it up, is that teams seem to get a reputation and match officials look for confirmation.
Or maybe I'm going mad.
