I agree we shouldn't stop him progressing but

If he signed a contract so if he were to move we would be in a good position to get some more cash! just like what Richard Wright done for Ipswich before he moved to Arsenal! andthat would stop him doing a Marshall and leaving on a free! (ok Marshall might be a bad example!)
