Either your hard disk is knackered, you have a virus...

...or your boot sector has been corrupted. All of which invovle techie stuff you don't sound too confident at.

BTW, how are you posting this message? Are you using another computer, or is there a way around it?

Things to try;

1. Is everything plugged in properly in the back of the drive, i.e. there should be a 4-pin power lead and a data cable connected (either a ribbon cable or thin cable with a smallish (~12mm x 5mm) connector).

2. Are the data cables properly seated in the motherboard?

3. Does the hard disk do anything when you turn the computer on? You should hear some noise and feel a small vibration.

All in all, it's probably best if you have a tame nerd around to play with it (Everyone knows a computer nerd) - they will be able to see what is going on and will know what to look for in each case.
