Back in the day I used to refine silver

We'd smelt it, turn it into fine grain by pouring it into water, dissolve in nitric acid, then electroplate back out of solution, smelt again, skim off the impurities with borax, and ta da. 99.9% purity silver. LAO approved.

My hands and arms were almost permanently covered in black blotches. Memory may not serve me correctly, but I vaguely recall you could get it off using something that contained arsenic.
