re off the beaten track...

...how easy is that to do when you're on one of these monstrous cruise ships? Do you get enough time / can you physically escape the hordes? Or do you just give up and do the exploring when on lower key cruises/non cruise trips?

My favourite place for exploring like that is Cairo. Once you get away from the main tourist spots its such a magical - and much more bearable - city.
