Luck?

You need luck to have the resources you need at the time they will have most impact.

And you need luck that the injection of funds buys the right players, and luck that the right players actually perform.

Lurk on the Brewers Reddit and you will read tales of woe about how they didn't invest in their batters when they had a world class pitching team. They bought some promising batters just before those pitchers actually peaked, and those batters didn't perform to expectations. So they missed their golden window to make the World Series.

Now you read tales of how some star players will be let go because they can't afford the contracts, and how they are less active than peers in the transfer market equivalent, how they're bottom of the pile for wages, how their income streams don't let them compete with the bigger teams, how their owner is tight, and on and on.

Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose.
