Actually the referee only said that he 'could have' given him a yellow card. This doesn't mean it was not possible for him to show the red.

Think about it: the offence still happened - it didn't undo itself just because a goal could have followed. And he DID deny a clear goalscoring opportunity. It's just that another goalscoring opportunity presented itself immediately.

Del Horno took him out chest high. There is simply no debate there.
