My first game ever
Was in 1979. Home to Man Utd in the League Cup. It was a night game and I went with my dad. I remember the crowd noise, the drizzle in the floodlights, the buzz as we approached the ground. I was hooked before a ball had been kicked.
We went on to win the game 4-1. In truth I don’t remember much. Was a bit young to figure out what was going on, how we played. But I remember the crowd giving Utd the “easy! Easy! Easy!” chants as the game drew to a close.
It was overall simply brilliant. And I immediately began to pester my dad to go again. (Started going to every game in 1981.)
All I can say is, boy did that game ever give me a false view of what I could expect from being a Norwich fan! Being a Norwich fan is exactly as you describe. There’s always hope, but for every bout of hope there is always a false dawn round the corner!
