This one is a middle class World Cup. The working class are not only unable to afford it,
even by saving for two to four years, but most of them can’t even watch half the games as they have been on in the morning and afternoon (yes I know that’s more a time zone issue but with Christmas coming up probably can’t afford too many days off either).
If I were to go to a World Cup I’d probably prefer one like this (in a nicer country) than the previous ones although that is now probably down to age.
However to watch on the telly it is quite sterile I’d say.
The thing is, the next World Cup will be the same. Incredibly expensive - maybe even more so given the distances between venues. The previous one was in a country where nobody dared to kick off (don’t think there was fan trouble?). So I wonder if it is too much to hope that after a gap of 16 years where the hooligans were unable to travel to tournaments in large groups, that the hooligans element might just fade out in time for a good old European tournament in 2030?
(Note I know the euros have been in between and threaten to keep that element alive).
I was going to write that football is traditionally a working class game but of course it isn’t. It was originally a game played by public schoolboys.
