If you want to know why we don't talk about acid rain anymore, it's (mostly) because a whole raft of restrictions were put on coal fired power stations that required them to start using fuels with much lower sulphur content and/or install equipment that captured the sulphur before it escaped up the chimney. Before these interventions it was a massive problem and a lot of international cooperation and investment was needed to address it. Most of our sulphur was carried to Scandinavia where it fell on their forests and lakes and did cause widespread harm as things slowly acidified.

So it didn't just go away. Just like global warming and climate change won't just go away if we carry on.
The fact we don't really burn much coal at all these days is helpful too. Although places like Germany and Poland do still burn a lot of lignite for power, so there's still quite a lot of it about.
