I don't think Webber has helped him at all in that regard

by not communicating himself with them media, he's basically letting Smith speak on behalf of the club, and be a lightning rod for all the general frustration and apathy that has built up. And he's also having to deal with a relatively hostile media who aren't happy at being frozen out by the club, and won't hesitate to make some clickbait story out of any throwaway remark he makes.
