Bringing in their 'own' players is restricted by two transfer windows a year and the money the club has to send. This is the same situation for Smith as any other manager. I suspect he will say that the constantly chopping and changing starting line up has been mostly dictated by injuries as much as him struggling to find his preferred formation. What do you mean by 'friction against changing manager doesn't feel like it's there'.
