OT match report
Yesterday saw a bottom of the table six pointer, with the once-mighty OTs (sadly now weakened by a series of star players getting first married and then fat, and retiring) pitted against the Old Wykehamists.
The OWs (without a win to their name so far this season, but along come the OTs) play on a 3G pitch in Acton, so getting there involved the usual London traffic but did at least offer superlative coffee opportunities. A huge crowd had gathered of at least 10 supporters; OWs lost on crowd noise but easily won the optics, with several pulchritudinous girlfriends choosing to sacrifice their Saturday mornings in the hope of improving their engagement prospects.
OTs started with a bang and dominated the first 15 mins, during which they scored what will probably be their goal of the season (a 40 yard lob of the OWs' tiny keeper, who was almost as big as Massive Michael). "It's just like watching Brazil", we sang. Numerous opportunities to double the lead were spurned, and Gitlet #1 missed an open goal by trying to glance a header to the near post instead of burying it.
Inevitably the first time OWs were allowed into the OT half they scored, with a punt into the area, some pinball and a poke home. "Are you Norwich in disguise?" we sang.
The second half got increasingly scrappy. OWs' main weapon was a centre back who could throw the ball further than either goalkeeper could kick it and was able to launch throw-ins into the box from anywhere in the OT half. However, when OTs were able to get the bouncing ball on the floor they played lovely football and a winner felt as though it was coming. Then disaster.
With OWs clinging on for a draw their subs played silly buggers about giving the ball back to OTs for a throw in. Pushing and shoving ensued and the OT right wingback was shown a straight red. Suddenly OWs flooded forward. A free kick from outside the box was hammered high and it seemed that the danger had passed but just like an under 10 match the OT keeper took a goal kick so weak that it hardly got out of the area. OWs grabbed possession and with the last kick of the game scuffed a winner home. It was a massive kick in the nuts and left OTs rooted to the bottom of the Arthurian League and needing serious improvements before Christmas.
Grandpa Git had a happy time, including in particular sitting on his rollator in the pub afterwards with the lads. A real pleasure when you're nearly 90!
The M25 traffic was kind on the way back and we cheered when Radio 5 told us that City were 0-2 up. "3-2, we're gonna lose 3-2" we cynically sang. Then it all started to unravel ... hearts in our mouths for the final 15 minutes. Phew.
Grass roots footy is a lot of fun but losing in the 90th minute hurts just as much!
