UK has more offshore wind power than any other nation on earth

The issue is what to do when it isn't windy. Many European countries - I'm looking at you Germany - still burn lots of lignite (dirtiest form of coal) as a backup. The UK, in its wisdom, closed down North sea gas production, banned shale fracking and closed coal power plants.

In a trade off ethics vs economy, the UK leaned more heavily towards ethics. So no coal, no Russian gas and more wind power.

This decision has resulted in an increase in exposure to external energy price variations.

I'm not going to say the situation is a result of putting an angry Swedish child in charge of energy policy - the decisions primarily stem from the Cameron/Clegg era. I will say that the failure to acknowledge that the rapid drive toward zero carbon have exposed us to increased international gas prices. I think we will see all european governments rapidly alter the ethics-econony balance back toward economy in the near term.
