Plenty of sports operate wild card systems, tennis being the obvious one and that allows all sorts of questionable picks.
In fact, most events in that sport and others are based on world rankings. So even the guy at number 25 who nevr won anything gets in every year.
This problem was created long ago when they started letting teams finishing as low as fourth into the competition. This was bound to happen sooner or later.
The real debate should be whether it is fair that Everton are in THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
