I think people saying we were “alright” last night are being pretty harsh
Millwall we’re really well organised. They were all at it too, worked incredibly hard - they worked incredibly hard to keep pressure on the ball and men behind it. And the ref let them get away with loads. I’m not accusing them of being incredibly dirty, but the ref allowed a lot of shirt pulling, pushing, grabbing, wrestling. He had a very high hurdle for a foul. Throughout the game, their defender simply ran through the back of Sarge, or barged him over every time there was a challenge - and Sarge took it, kept fighting, often won, and always came back for more. All the more reason why Rowett blahing about the second goal is crazy, given what the ref had let go until that point.
In those circumstances I thought it was a really good display. A lot of Premier league fancy dans would not have fancied the physical side and would have hid. We didn’t. We went at them, and then the higher quality we have at this level did the rest.
I’m a way, last night was more impressive than some of the hammerings we dished out last time. Huddersfield last promotion season. The oppo basically downed tools, and just let us showboat. Tremendous fun, loved it if course, but nothing like the challenge we faced last night.
The most important thing about last night was that we showed that enough of this squad still have that hunger to face up to physical opponents. I hadn’t been convinced of that before. I am now. Saw it all over the pitch yesterday.
