we pulled off such an excellent decision to sign him on loan that season? And similarly the brilliance of the signing of Emi?

Those were great signings of top players who weren’t on the radar of many other clubs. And they were perfect signings for us. It’s always going to be near impossible to consistently follow that up.

No we didn’t have a great transfer period last season but those windows have been more common for us than the early ones with Farke and Webber. But Webber gets slated constantly for last season rather than applauded for the signings that got us there twice.

We also don’t factor in that presumably Webber arrived with a big list of talents he’d identified over the preceding few years. The players on that initial list would now be getting older and most would have either shown the promise he saw and consequently be now out of our reach, or failed to develop and therefore drop off the list.

Most of his targets, especially early, were foreign and were scouted abroad. We shouldn’t underestimate the impact covid and travel restrictions had on our ability to do that and keep that scouting list on the same level.
