IMHO the problem is people give away too much for free.
If all news sites stopped giving away news stories for free then people would be forced to pay.
There needs to be a universal micro-payment system for articles.
If people are charged a few pennies automatically to read an article they will have no problem with it.
Most don't want a hefty monthly subscription to read a few articles.
