Think you might be overlooking the Athletic network that he's tapped into

He's clearly getting Smiths and or Shakespeares thoughts on things such as squad quality. He's definitely not getting that from 9am prematch pressers. S&S worked in the Midlands for a long while, maybe he's getting it secondhand from the many Midlands correspondents who have pre-existing relationships with them?
