Webber and self funding club

The people calling for Webber’s head just don’t understand modern football.

Whether you want delia to sell up or not, the fact is right now we are a self funding club.

A promoted self funding club has to get really really lucky to survive.

Webber’s signings with maybe two exceptions haven’t been good. However, on paper they looked ok. Norwich just don’t have the financial clout and that gives them two main problems.

One. they don’t have the money to spend twenty thirty million on one player ie a player that it is a solid bet to be a different maker at prem level.

Two. Because they can’t do the above they have to spread the money over several players with maybe the most expensive being 10 million. These days that might get you a good player for this league or a bang average one.

So to stay up Norwich have to hit on maybe 4/5 or 5/6 of these signings that can come in and make a big difference. Arguably they have hit on 2, rashica and maybe Normann at a push.

Other clubs not self funded can either spend big on a sure fire player or two or spend less on day 8 players which is more likely to give you 4 or 5 hits.

Webber has done much better this time in that they have spent more but the odds are they were unlikely to hit on enough of the type of players (they can afford) to realistically stay up.

The financial state of the game is awful and I have always argued for a wage cap. Sadly that won’t happen but fans need to realise that a self funded club is likely at very best to be a yo yo club. So Norwich are achieving at the top of what they can expect. That is down to the excellent work of Webber.

By all means if you are obsessed with winning and not how you win then call for a big money takeover. But be careful what you wish for, you may end up in bed with the devil.
