But in the knowledge that the risks are very evident. I'm not saying I disagree with the approach being taken, but it's naive of anyone to think we are not escalating the conflict and taking us closer to open war with Russia.

The only alternative I can think of would have been to just tell the Ukrainians to give him the east in return for the west joining the EU/NATO (and do this for all the currently non-aligned states). But that's all very 'Scramble for Africa'.

Because when we push him right to the limit, and he says stop the sanctions or I drop a nuke, what *are* we going to do?
